Superconference 2007: Lessons Learned

Wow! What a fantastic session. What fantastic clients. What an incredible opportunity to learn, grow and change. The feedback we are receiving about the Miami Superconference is nothing short of spectacular. I am proud to say that it lived up to it's promise - as a terrific opportunity to interact with peers and experts, develop new ways of thinking about what success means, and to share new ideas about creating a dream practice and life. I was thrilled to meet with members from around the country, and excited about the dynamic that existed throughout the conference as people were open to new ideas and opportunities, and ready and willing to make changes that would propel them toward success, happiness and personal fulfillment.

Our guests speakers and vendors shared a great deal of valuable information with us. The feedback we received from our attendees indicated that they thought the presentations were extremely valuable, and that next year they want even more - more guest speakers, more vendors, more opportunities to grow and embrace change - and we plan to accommodate your wishes, creating an even better conference next year. I personally embraced the opportunity to learn, because my members never fail to teach me something.

Here was the biggest lesson I learned: Practicing DCs almost universally need to learn to become Commanders of Change . They must be unafraid to eject what is not working. They must set life up on their own terms. They must do the right thing, regardless of external pressures to compromise, and even if it will take extensive work. Unsuccessful people are universally unwilling to do the work needed to take effective steps for change, and yet personal growth is all about change. It’s about letting go of past ideas. It’s about finding new pathways, and fine-tuning for maximum results. Constant learning and upgrades. New skill sets.

This will be our focus at Superconference 2008, where we will build upon the successful platform for change and growth we have established, making the conference even bigger and better than before. (You can learn more about next year's Superconference, which will be held October 31 - November 2, 2008, in Marina Del Ray, California, here.)

In the meantime, you can learn more about the changes needed to expand your practice and your life by listening to the free 45-minute seminar we conducted earlier this week. Get it here at: http://instantTeleseminar.com/?eventid=996123

Attaining phenomenal results, and the life and practice of your dreams requires introspection, work, and good coaching when you are stuck or unsure about what to do next.

I look forward to helping you grow your practice, and your life too! Thanks for a wonderful weekend in Miami and here's to a continued growth and success throughout the rest of the year and in 2008!

The Marathon Called Practice

Training for and running a successful professional practice is a lot like training for and running a marathon. As someone with experience running marathons, I feel confident telling you the most critical part of success happens long before the race ever begins. The training program is the most critical part. If you train correctly, the race itself is almost an afterthought.

Would you stop training for a marathon after running around the block a few times? No - it would be folly! In a similar vein, you cannot stop your professional training after completion of your initial medical training. You need to set up a continuing, effective "training program" in order to ensure that you are successful in your life and practice. By practicing in this way, we minimize surprises, develop resilience, and prove to ourselves we can accomplish much, much more than we may have ever thought possible.

To set up an effective training program, you must plan ahead. Select your "race" about 4-6 months ahead of time. If you’re not in great shape it should be 1-3 years out!

Get out a calendar, and work backwards from the goal. (Remember, this is the same approach I cover in “The End in Mind” Core Module). Only by working backwards do we give ourselves enough time to allow latitude for unforeseen obstacles.

Don’t forget to think about your goal in detail! The more details the better. This also forms the foundation for your daily meditation and written visualization, which all great athletes and performers do. When do you train? How long, and how far? When do you rest? What other things are critical (for example nutrition and hydration)? When do you really ramp things up? How many miles do you put on your gear before adjusting or renewing it, especially basics like great shoes or your Perfect Practice Platform, the basis of your entire professional life.

You must be prepared to get bruised, and scraped up with minimal consequences. You get the best tools you can afford. Use great “orthotics” to fine tune your stride if need be. Get the assistance of a great training coach, with real world experience. Take advantage of your coach's wealth of expertise. Don't ignore the benefits of working closely with someone who has done what you are trying to accomplish!

Benchmark yourself. Even if you don’t finish the race like you wanted to this time, what have you learned? What do you leave in or drop from your next training schedule?

Just by doing this bit of planning, you will be way ahead of where you were, and you will feel great about what you learn and accomplish. And you are pumped, because now you know - with a little more refinement, you are ready to plan for your next Personal Record.
